[General] What counts as 'Other files'?

What counts as 'Other files'?

I'm not the biggest expert when it comes to phones.

But I connected my iPad to iTunes the other day, I learned I had a lot of space being used up in the 'Other files' tab and learned it's related to unused Cache information and stuff, and other corrupted files etc, and the way to get rid of it was to backup my iPad, restore it and put the backup back on the iPad - which worked.
So I decided to connect my phone to my PC for the first time in a long while to find a similar problem on my phone, but would it be a similar issue? iTunes has an Apps tab unlike Android so I'm not sure if it would be space used by them, or the same problem as the iPad.

Furthermore, if I'm going to do the backup then restore thing, how do I backup my phone? PC Companion is a freaking pain in the *** and I hate it, constantly telling me to update when it has been etc. So I really don't know how to work it. Help would be much appreciated.

Phone is an Xperia Play R800 btw.

[General] Google Calendar app and notification light?

Google Calendar app and notification light?

Previously, I was just using the stock calendar app on my GNex (whatever would come with the gapps package from 3/1), but I noticed the Play Store version got updated, and my stock one couldn't "update" to that version for whatever reason. So, I installed the one from the Play Store and disabled the stock app.

I always let any calendar events leave a notification in my notification pull down menu, because it's a good easy reminder that I have something to do in the near future (so I don't forget, duh). But with this new Play Store version, if I leave the item in my notification bar, when my screen is off, the notification LED constantly blinks white. It never did this on the stock version. I want it to stop doing that, but I can't find anything in the settings of the app specifically related to the LED. I just see the option to turn notifications on or off, but I want to keep the actual notification in my pull down bar. Is that possible, or no?

[General] What if I don't want to update?

What if I don't want to update?

Open the Play Store App and go into the Settings. You can enable or disable auto update for all apps through settings. Also, if you do want a particular app to auto-update, but not all, then open go into the "my apps" setting and select the app you want to auto-update and enable/disable the setting from the setting tab.

Hopefully this helps...let us know if you have further questions.

[General] Issues installing apps PLEASE HELP

Issues installing apps PLEASE HELP

I recently purchased a used Samsung Galaxy S online and had it transferred earlier today to my original phone number. Though content with my purchase, I am experiencing some issues installing several applications and widgets. Whenever I search for the app in Google Play or GO Market, I receive a pop-up window that states "The requested item could not be found." Also, I was attempting to install Instagram on my phone through the internet browser on play.google.com but it says that it is already installed on my phone. I have searched through my applications to which I have not found any applications that may have already been installed by the previous user. If it is of any extra assistance, the phone was flashed from Cellular South to CSpire (assuming this might be the cause of some issues).

Thanks in advance!

[General] How to post a pic in a thread?

Sorry, let me ask a little more specifically: are you using the Android Central Forums app or the newer Android central app (the one that includes news stories)?

If you're using the Forums app, tap the little camera icon, select Gallery, then select the photo you want to upload (you should be able to find your screenshot easily). Select "This Forum" rather than "Tapatalk Hosted" when prompted.

[General] Streaming from a server to Samsung Galaxy Tab 2

Hi

I am checking this out on behalf of a friend. He has a Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 tablet. He also has a Linux based server at home which he has his photos and films stored on. Is there a way for him to access these files from his tablet. Can he stream the films from the server to the tablet? Does he need to download an app for this?

Cheers

[General] Picture in gallery is uncropped, opened is cropped

Hi all,
I got an email with a photo attached. I saved the photo to the sd card and when viewing the pictures in the gallery the photo is clearly uncropped. When opening the picture a cropped version appears. Opening the file on my desktop computer shows only the cropped version. Any ideas on how to get the whole thing? I know the information is still there on some level, otherwise it wouldn't appear in the gallery thumbnails.

[General] Easy Batter Saver app

I just downloaded this app, and I noticed that in the notification bar, the little droid is only green when I have wifi, data, or bluetooth on. Is the app only saving battery while those are on? Anyone else have experience with this app to tell me? Also, is there an even better app than this, perhaps one that uses less CPU and RAM? It's just for emergencies, because I don't really need a battery saver, but it's good to have one just in case.

Also, for other users of this app, the highest I can get it to save is 1.6x, is there optimal settings to increase that number? Thank you so much!

Android app compatibility issue on Nook HD+ and Asus TF300T

I have a weird App compatibility issue. As per the Developer console, my app seems to be compatible and available on the Nook HD+ and Asus TF300T. It shows a "Green" checkmark against these two.

However, two users have gotten back saying that the Play Store shows my app as incompatible with their device.

This is what I have:

Any idea what could be wrong?

Facebook SDK 3.0 minimum Android OS - Stack Overflow

Tell me more ×

Stack Overflow is a question and answer site for professional and enthusiast programmers. It's 100% free, no registration required.

Do we have somewhere the reliable info about the minimum Android OS supported by Facebook SDK 3.0? I have checked on our side, it seems the Facebook SDK 3.0 does not work stable on Android FW 2.1 (some devices could not log-in, some device could log-in but crash after few minutes)

Thank you very much for your support. Hao

The Facebook SDK documentation reads:

In the 1st section titled: Install the Prerequisites

You'll need to have the Android 2.2 (API 8) components installed in order to use the Facebook SDK.

Source: https://developers.facebook.com/docs/getting-started/facebook-sdk-for-android/3.0/

I suspect it could indeed be the case that it only supports devices 2.2 and up. Logical step perhaps, considering that only 1.7% devices across the World use the 2.1 API.

Personally, and in all honesty, I support 2.2+ devices for supporting the Aviary SDK and never really checked if the Facebook SDK works on 2.1.

[General] Problem with 'authorise HTC sense'

Hi, Android 4.1.1 on a Desire X.

I deleted my Flickr account (moved to ipernity) and uninstalled the flickr app. Now I'm getting the error "Authorise HTC Sense - flickr is not responding, try signing in". But of course I can't sign in, because I no longer have a flickr account.

How do I remove Flickr from HTC Sense on my phone? Where are the options for HTC Sense itself located?

Many thanks!

Stephen.

EDIT: Ah, under "Settings:Apps:All apps" there was a "Flickr for HTC Sense". I can't uninstall that, or open it, only Force Stop.

I can only see the main "HTC Sense" under Settings-Apps too, so can't open it directly to tell it to stop looking for Flickr. Any ideas?

I have placed my TextView's inside a LinearLayout which is again under a HorizontalScrollView, but i don't see it getting scrolled.

You should put your HorizontalListView inside a LinearLayout and pass the tag xlms to LinearLayout and the scroll will work perfectly!

[android help] android.content.ActivityNotFoundException, unable to start activity

I am not sure what you are trying to do.

But a couple of suggestions to try.

package="com.eco4cloud.activities" // make sure package name is right

Mention the package name as above

android:name="com.eco4cloud.activities.Main"
// this probably MainActivity. Cross Check once
android:label="@string/app_name" >

Since you have explicit intent you don't require a intent-filter

// use this assuming Datacenters is in package com.eco4cloud.activities
android:name=".Datacenters"
android:label="@string/app_name" >

If you are starting a activity in a non-activity class

public void startDatacenters() {
Intent intent = new Intent(context, Datacenters.class);
// assuming context is the activity content
context.startActivity(intent);
//in your case you have activity.startActivity(intent)
// not sure what activity is
}

[android help] How to add date in sqlite database

I have sqlite database

private static final String DB_PROCESS_CREATE = "create table "
+ DB_TABLE_PROCESS + "(" + PROCESS_ID
+ " integer primary key autoincrement, "
+ PROCESS_DATE + " date);";

I create it `db.execSQL(DB_PROCESS_CREATE);

How to add date value in this datebase? I tried :

String date = new SimpleDateFormat("yyyy.MM.dd").format(Calendar
.getInstance().getTime());
ContentValues cv = new ContentValues();
cv.put(db.PROCESS_DATE,Date.valueOf(date));
db.mDB.insert(db.DB_TABLE_PROCESS, null, cv));

But then I get error "The method put(String, String) in the type ContentValues is not applicable for the arguments (String, Date)".

[android help] How to start an activity from a thread class in android?

multithreading - How to start an activity from a thread class in android? - Stack Overflow

Tell me more ×

Stack Overflow is a question and answer site for professional and enthusiast programmers. It's 100% free, no registration required.

I am extending a thread class and from that class I want to start an activity. How to do this?

You need to call startActivity() on the application's main thread. One way to do that is by doing the following:

  1. Initialize a Handler and associate it with the application's main thread.

    Handler handler = new Handler(Looper.getMainLooper());

  2. Wrap the code that will start the Activity inside an anonymous Runnable class and pass it to the Handler#post(Runnable) method.

    handler.post(new Runnable() {
    @Override
    public void run() {
    Intent intent = new Intent (MyActivity.this, NextActivity.class);
    startActivity(intent);
    }
    });

you can use Something like this.

public class MyActivity extends Activity
{
Handler hander = new Handler(){
public void handleMessage(Message m){
Intent intent = new Intent (MyActivity.this, Next.class);
startActivity(intent);
}
};
pubilc void onCreate(Bundle ic)
{
//your code setContentView() etc....
Thread toRun = new Thread()
{
public void run()
{
hander.sendMessage(1);
}
}
toRun.start();
}
}

Well to start an activity of an class, a class should extends with activity according to me.

But if you want to start activity with some threading function you can do these things.

Instead of extends Thread, use implements Runnable. After that some class that have an Activity you just call the start thread and put your logic and that start Intent.

I think this is the good solution for you.
