scratching my head about something...

I simply don't understand how or why it is that phone makers can (or do) use the same names for their phones, like.. nexus, or droid, or any others i may be out of the loop on...

thanks for any response.. It may be a stupid question, but since I got my photon 4g I havnt really paid attention to new releases or anything.. (and im stuck with the damned broken thing for another 6 months)(as if you havnt heard that gripe already)
